International Day of Older Persons
Monday October 1 is the International Day of Older Persons, an initiative of the United Nations that shines a light on the forever-growing population of people over 60. Almost 700 million people are currently over the age of 60 and by 2050 that number will have reached 2 billion. There has never been a more important time to focus on the challenges faced by our elderly citizens than right now.
International Day of Older Persons 2018 celebrates the 70th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Aligning with the United Nations Secretary-General’s guiding principle of “Leaving No-One Behind”, it reaffirms the importance of providing the full and equal enjoyment of all human rights and fundamental freedoms for, not only older persons, but all human beings. It’s about giving everyone an equal platform to enjoy these human rights and continue to make essential contributions to the functioning of society.
This is something that sits very closely with ActivTec. Our ethos is “Improving lives with our outstanding equipment management solutions”. Whether through Aged Care, Hospitals, Special Schools or NDIS, we aim to improve lives and assist in providing equal opportunities for everyone.
On a professional level, it’s a day to take a step back and reflect on why we do what we do. Whether working in Aged Care, Health Care, Education or here at ActivTec, we are all dedicated to improving lives. On a personal level, it’s a day to commemorate the significant and influential roles that older persons have had in our lives. Every single one of our lives has been impacted by someone over 60, whether that be a grandparent, parent, relative, family friend or neighbour.
On October 1 2018, take some time to think about those who got us where we are today. Think about how you can contribute to the comfort, wellbeing and quality of life of an older person, today and in the future. For more information visit http://www.un.org/en/events/olderpersonsday/.
