Aged Care Employee Day: A Chat with Personal Carer Ruby

It takes a special person to choose a career in aged care. They are constantly making a difference to the lives of so many older people and their families and expect very little in return. Thanks to Leading Aged Services Australia, these selfless workers are given a day to be celebrated. Aged Care Employee Day is a day to honour and recognise the hundreds of thousands of people who work in the aged care industry. To commemorate Aged Care Employee Day this year, we had a chat with one of these special people. Ruby is a Personal Carer at Lutheran Services Salem Aged Care in Toowoomba and, as you'll learn, she loves her job.

Why did you choose a career in aged care?

I have always wanted to do something in the healthcare field, but I think the turning point for me was when I saw my grandmother go into a nursing home. I remember I would always push her around in her wheelchair and I thought the job that the nurses did was amazing, and I wanted be that supporting person for someone else’s family.

What do you enjoy about your role?

I enjoy the fact that I get to care for such wonderful people. I feel as though this is my calling and genuinely love going to work every day. I enjoy that I get to spend time with amazing residents, and that I am able to make them laugh and enjoy their time with us.

What motivates you to do what you do?

The fact that we get to experience the personal satisfaction of knowing that you are doing a job that genuinely makes a difference to people’s lives is what motivates me. There’s nothing more rewarding than walking into a room and seeing a smile on someone’s face and knowing you’re the reason behind that smile.

Do you have any particular memories or stories that exemplify what it’s like to work in aged care?

Every time I walk into a particular resident’s room, we greet her with something funny that always puts a smile on her face. I couldn’t tell you the amount of times that I have made her cry with laughter, from singing, to dancing, to our inside jokes and games. We always enjoy spending time with her which makes my day and hers as well.

What makes Salem a special place to work?

At Salem we all genuinely care for our residents. The staff are always here to make the most of our resident's final years, making them feel like they are young again. We are always here to lend a hand with whatever the residents need. The atmosphere is always positive and happy, and we never have a dull moment at Salem.

And how are you celebrating Aged Care Employee Day?

At Salem we are having a barbecue for all our staff to celebrate doing the job we all love doing.

To Ruby and all other dedicated aged care employees, ActivTec would like to extend our appreciation of your great work. If the life of someone you know has been affected by aged care employees, make sure to show your gratitude. Today is a day to give thanks to people who should be celebrated every day of the year.

A special thanks to Ruby, Carly and the teams at Salem Aged Care and Lutheran Services for their assistance with this interview.
